This March, 4 Americans from South Carolina were attacked and kidnapped in Matamoros Mexico. A state in Mexico bordering Texas. The woman in the group was going to get a tummy tuck operation in Mexico and 3 male friends joined her. While driving through Mexico, they were attacked by armed gunmen supposedly from the Gulf Cartel. The next day, Mexican Police went to search for them. The kidnappers killed 2 of the American Men as the police raided their hideout. The woman and one of the men were rescued and have been returned to the US.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, a number of Republican Politicians are calling for American Military Force in Mexico. Republicans such as Lindsay Graham and Dan Crenshaw want the US Military to go into Mexico and engage in combat with the DRUG CARTELS of Mexico. https://www.businessinsider.com/lindsey-graham-fury-might-mexico-cartels-2023-3 The President of Mexico Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador aka AMLO has responded and said Mexico rejects American Military Intervention in their country. Mexico will not allow the US to send in the military into their country. Without a doubt Mexico is in crisis. It has been in crisis for a very long time. Mexico is extremely violent, the drug cartels are very powerful, and the government of Mexico is totally corrupt. Cartels have been a problem in Mexico mostly since the 1980s. The Mexican Government launched “an all out war” against the cartels in 2006, yet Mexico’s drug war has gone terribly. Some very high profile government officials in Mexico have been exposed as corrupt and working with drug cartels when they were supposed to be fighting drugs.
One major example is Genaro Garcia Luna, who was recently put on trial in the United States and convicted by a jury in Brooklyn. Luna was a top law enforcement official, who led Mexico’s version of the FBI from 2001-2006 and then served as Minister of Public Security of Mexico from 2006-2012. He was exposed that at the same time he worked with the Sinaloa Cartel and Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

The US strategy of supporting the Mexican Government to fight the drug cartels has failed. The Mexican Government is neither willing or able to actually put an end to the terror of drug cartels in Mexico. Mexico is a narco state and extremely violent. Now some Republicans like the ones I mentioned believe the only solution is for the US to intervene itself into Mexico to fix Mexico’s problems and combat the drug cartels directly. But is that really the solution? I feel like writing a whole separate post about that. But what is obvious is drugs continue to win the “war on drugs” And Mexico is just an unsafe country to visit.

Yikes…I think war in Mexico with a long ongoing insurgency will be worst than iraq since its by our border…

Read my other post, where I discuss my predictions how such a war between Mexico and America would go. For those reasons I highly doubt America will actually go through with it.
