Why are there so many splits in the Presbyterian Church? Here’s an Explanation

I was raised in the Presbyterian Church until the age of 16. I grew up going to 2 different Presbyterian Churches. Both were Presbyterian Church USA. One was very liberal and even had women pastors and the other was more traditionalist. The Presbyterian Church has gone through so many splits especially during the 20th and 21st Century. Here is an article from the Gospel Coalition which explains the differences between the different Presbyterian Churches

Both Right Wing and Left Wing Christians are a Problem for Christianity

Christianity especially in the United States has been infiltrated by all types of political extremes. This has left the body divided and fighting among itself. In my last post I discussed right wing republican Christians and their obsession with Donald Trump. Someone pointed out how bad progressive liberal Christians are too. I am going to talk about that in this post.

Since last year I have had some negative interactions with social justice warrior progessives that used to go to my church. One of them is a very smart man from India. He used to go to my church and once helped with with writing my job resumes. Sadly this person has become a very radicalized leftist. After the killing of George Floyd, this man who professes to be a Christian was condoning the looting and protests that followed. He was posting these views on his facebook in addition to leftist comedian Trevor Noah. When I asked this man why he was posting these views on his Facebook he reacted in a hostile way. I asked how can a Christian condone looting and rioting. Rather than using the Bible, this man tried pointing me to some “Christian Book” about justice or something. This person also quotes Angela Davis quotes on his facebook in the name of “social justice” This man argued several times with me on facebook messenger. I told I did not want to argue and it would be more helpful to talk over the phone about these things. He never did.

There is nothing wrong with Christians getting involved in social issues. What does matter is what are the causes they are getting involved in and what are the methods. In the case of Black Lives Matter, it is not ok. They are a destructive group who engages in rioting, looting, and want to get revenge on the police. Christians should have nothing to do with them. Nor should Christians be associcated with radicals such as Angela Davis. Christianity and Marxism are not compatible. That should be common knowledge for all Christians. Yet Progressive Christians have largely strayed from the Bible and are drawn to secular forms of social justice, since they believe the church won’t do anything. That is like leaving the faith. I myself am an activist, but I keep it in line with Christianity. I seek advice from my pastors. I do not engage in violence. Part of my activism involves immigration from Central America and the root causes of it

There are other former members of my church who I ended up blocking on facebook when I saw them posting videos of themselves at the destroying of statues and praising vandalism. That is a poor witness for Christ!

Many have lost sight of what our duty as Christians is to be. To be Ambassadors for Jesus Christ on this earth, to be salt and light, and to go into all the world and preach His good news of salvation. As I mentioned in my previous article, right wing christians have lost sight of this too. They are pre-occupied with preserving their American Freedoms and getting in these cultural wars. In addition viewing Donald Trump as a “messiah” They too are consumed with so much hate. It is fueled by Fox News and One America News.

The church is dangerously divided. I don’t believe many will reconcile, but go deeper in their echo chambers of anger. Satan enjoys this. When Christianity is bitterly divided and fighting itself, less people will hear the Gospel and churches collapse.

Christians in persecuted countries have more unity than many Christians do in the United States. Thankfully many Christians here on WordPress are still sane and rational and focused on what is most important.

Christians Must Not Put Their Hope On Donald Trump

I am very discouraged by how many professing Christians in this country, including in my own church are still obssessed with Donald Trump. They are still angry at the 2020 election, ranting about it, and keep talking about Donald Trump needing to be President again.

More and more Christians, including at my church and some in my family are more focused on converting People to become a Republican/Conservative than sharing the good news of Salvation of Jesus Christ. This is a massive problem. Matthew 28: 19-20 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. That is the command of Jesus!

Jesus did not command us go and convert everyone into a Republican and vote for this party in every election and hate the Democrat Party. Yet that is how many Christians are thinking. Not to stereotype but Christians in the 50+ age range (at least in my church and in my family). The conflation of Christianity and Right-Wing Politics is to blame for this. Especially with the Moral Majority Movement in the 1970s and 1980s. And with the 2016 Presidential Election it only got uglier.

I really don’t know how to talk any longer to Christians who keep dwelling in anger that Donald Trump is no longer president. Especially with “Christians” who have become drawn into QANON and watching One America News. If we are Christians we need to have discernment, but many are just blindly believing some of the most ridiculous and baseless conspiracy theories. They are consumed with hatred for Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Liberals, and Republicans who don’t like Trump. How are we to be salt and light? This has sown so much division including in the church. When I encounter people at my church who want to fight with me for not sharing their extreme views and love of Donald Trump, I am very discouraged. The Pastoral Staff have discouraged this behavoir, but it continues. I have lost many friends at my own church. And there are many family members of mine that I just cannot talk with anymore. I don’t like being yelled at on the phone by family members or members of my church.

I do not believe large numbers of such people will repent. Their hearts will only continue to be hardened. Only a faithful remnant of Christians will remain in the United States. I am glad that many of the people I interact with here on WordPress are still that faithful remnant and rational. We as Christians need to stay away from politically charged cable news. Cable News does not bring anyone closer to Christ.

The Downfall of the Presbyterian Church USA

The Presbyterian Church USA denomination was created in 1983. It was a merger of different Presbyterian Denominations. The Presbyterian Church USA became one of the most liberal Protestant Denominations from the late 20th Century to the present day and completely go against scripture. I was raised going to the Presbyterian Church until I was 16 years and it saddens me so much how they have gone against scripture.

My grandparents on my mom’s side began attending a Presbyterian Church here in Southern California back in 1970, and my mom and uncle were raised in it too. My mother and I continued going to Presbyterian Church until 2008 when I was 16. We felt we had no choice but to leave after the Presbyterian Church began accepting practicing homo-sexuals to become ordained ministers. We joined a Four Square Church in 2008 and have stayed their since.

Where did the Presbyterian Church start going wrong? That is debatable, but in 1973, they were already beginning to allow women to become ordained ministers which the New Testament speaks against. When the Presbyterian Church USA was merged in 1983, they began social justice initiatives which were not Biblical. Rather than sticking with the Bible, they wanted to adapt to the changing cultural views in the United States. The Presbyterian Church USA is very liberal about homosexuality. It’s not even a sin to them, they teach it’s ok to be Gay and still go to Heaven. This is clearly against Scripture. 1 Corinthians 6: 9-11 tells us that no one who practices homosexuality will inherit the kingdom of God. The Presbyterian Church USA didn’t want people to be offended, so they watered down scripture hoping homosexuals would feel comfortable coming to church and keep coming.

I will talk about my own family’s experience. The church that my grandparents attended since 1970 had a longtime pastor who became more and more liberal in his views during the next 20 years until his retirement in 1999. Already in the 1980s, they wanted to eliminate “homophobic” views in the congregation. My grandparents were very concerned, but didn’t know where else to go. Also during the 80s, the musical director of the church was engaging in a sexual affair with a married woman in the choir. The Pastor did not discipline this. Rather the woman divorced her husband and married the music director she was sleeping with. The Pastor married them! This caused my mom to leave that church shortly before she had me.

In 2002, the new pastor to replace our retired pastor was a woman. Since 2002, this Presbyterian Church has only had woman pastors. These women pastors did heretical sermons that God is both a man and a woman. What!? During communion time the woman pastor would say “All are welcome to the Lord’s table gay or straight” What!? As a teenage boy coming to my grandma’s church, I knew this was just wrong. I could not believe what I was hearing. Such bizarre heresy being preached.

In 2011, the Presbyterian Church USA decided to lift a ban on homosexuals becoming ordained. This has caused many people to leave and new split off churches in the Presbyterian Church. Also since then, they conduct same-sex weddings in the church. The Presbyterian Church USA does not stand for the Bible and do not care about following God’s clear spoken Word. Instead they want to adjust to the changing cultural views of the land, to not offend anyone. Truly tragic.

Like Catholics who leave to the Catholic Church and become Protestant, I feel like that with the Presbyterian Church. Now that I belong to a Four Square Church. It saddens me what happened to that church my family and I used to go to. As a kid I was mostly bored during the sermons to be honest. As a 29 year old adult, I can look back at those messages as insane heresy. The rest of the more Conservative Presbyterian Denominations were trying to stop these things from happening back in 2000 and before that, to no affect. Those who continue going to the Presbyterian Church USA and buy into the lies, are sadly blind and not reading their Bibles or re-writing the Bible in their minds. They are as lost as someone who has never heard of Christ. Matthew 18:6 comes to mind. But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

2 Timothy 4:3

2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

This Bible verse is timeless. For most of the 20th Century and most of the 21st Century until now, this Bible verse has mostly been applied the Prosperity Gospel preachers such as Joel Osteen, Creflo Dollar, Robert Tilton, etc. But now in this Covid Pandemic, more ridiculous conspiracies and crazy beliefs have taken hold of the church.

So many Conservative Christians in the United States spend their time watching Fox News, The Blaze, One America News, and all kinds of fringe people on You Tube. So many American Christians deny the covid pandemic. They believe in conspiracy theories that it is a conspiracy to take away Americans freedom forever. So many crazy pastors such as end-times fanatic John Hagee do sermons that the covid pandemic is “dress rehearsal” for the one world government.

So many members in my church, are buying into crazy right-wing conspiracy videos about the 2020 election, virus denial, and Pro-Trump messages. They have turned away from sticking to just the Bible. Instead of focusing on Jesus command of spreading the Gospel to lost, they instead want to fight and argue with fellow Christians who don’t share their political views. This has created so much division within the Body of Christ in the United States. Christians are ending friendships with each other for such trivial things. I myself have lost many friends, this past year and continue to lose friends my church. I have had to stop talking to some family members of mine who have yelled at me on the phone, because I don’t belong to the Republican Party. I don’t belong to any political party for the record.

Sound Teaching is being rejected by many Christians in the United States right now. Many only want to listen to angry political rants that praise Donald Trump and hate anyone who disagrees with them. One co-worker at my church who is 60 years old, was listening to some crazy pastor going on a rant about free-masons and saying that Senator Mitch Mconnell always has 2 masked men standing by him, controlling him like a puppet. What?

This is a very sad state for the church. Christians in persecuted countries that are not free, are astounded by this. Even though they are horribly repressed, they have so much more unity with each other, and they stick only to pure Biblical Doctrine.

Non-Believers need to know Christ before they possibly die from the virus. But how can Christians bring them to Christ while they dwell on bizarre conspiracies and fight with fellow Christians. That is not being useful for Jesus. I am heartbroken by how many people I have stopped talking to. The American church needs to repent. We need Sound Doctrine and must boycott the crazy false teachers.
